Summary on Grant Application Form
In this application we request support in order to use modern dynamical systems theory to explore how intermittent behaviour or bursting can arise in symmetric problems when the symmetries are broken by external influences. There are two major aspects to the project: in the first, we will examine bursting behaviour in systems with broken symmetries (for instance arising from the finite size of the domain of the problem) where the new intermittent behaviour arises as a result of the broken symmetry. The second aspect involves an investigation into the effects of breaking symmetry in systems that already have intermittent behaviour connected with the presence of symmetry. Recent progress in the understanding of the important role that symmetry plays in determining the dynamics of many systems makes this the right moment to consider the effect that inevitable weak symmetry breaking has on the dynamics.
