The IRC seeking effective solutions to the challenging problems concerning the dependability (i.e. reliability, safety, security and general trustworthiness) of large complex systems composed of computers and the people and organisations that directly depend on these computers.Achieving significant improvements in the dependability of such systems, especially ones that aim to exploit new technologies requires and understanding of the complete organisational and cultural context of which the computers are just a part. The IRC brings together a research team from economics, law, sociology, psychology and systems theory as well as computing, communications mathematics and informatics, to tackle these issues in close collaboration with industrial partners and their respective end-user populations.The research to be undertaken within the IRC will focus on five ongoing interdisciplinary research themes. Research relating to these themes is organised and monitored via an evolving set of project activities, each associated with one or more realistic driver applications. Further project activities and driver applications will be chosen in consultation with an Industrial Advisory Board, so as to achieve a rolling research programme that is responsive to evolving external developments.
