Summary on Grant Application Form |
Cooling is the longest stage in injection moulding. Minimisation of this stage has a capital benefit on manufacturing cost due to cycle time reduction. The proposed research exploits a novel cooling technique of gas-assisted, which is expected to offer significant advantages over the conventional gas-assisted process. The gas is used not just as means to achieve a hollow section but also as a heat exchange media that increases the energy transfer during cooling from the molten polymer. In the conventional gas-assisted process, the gas bubble is maintained under static pressure during the cooling phase. This noel approach considers the use of gas a low temperature and also its re-circulation (at different flow rates) to improve exchange efficiency. A patent application based on preliminary work has been filed. This patent is only a protection of the concept presented here. Substantial research is required in order to understand the process. This includes control of gas flow, temperature and pressure and their implications for the cooling stage. As a result, a new needle technology must come forward.
