This collaborative project involves the Universities of Kent and Surrey and Hewlett-Packard Ltd. The aim is to develop a low-cost OEMCM technology where glass substrates are used for the fabrication of both optical and electrical waveguides. Mm-wave and optoelectronic chips are located in Wells, produced in the glass by reactive ion etching, for alignment of the chips and the interconnects. Alternative techniques for the production of the alignment wells in the glass, such as moulding and ceramic formers, will also be studied. The chips are connected by lithographically defined electrical and optical interconnects rather than bond wires, with their unpredictable performance, or flip-chip bonding, which often produces short circuits on small devices. Ion exchange waveguides will be characterised and the ion species will be optimised for compatibility with other processing steps. Various insulators will be investigated to isolate the electrical and optical waveguides. Full wave electromagnetic simulations will be used to characterise interconnects and modules. A complex demonstrator circuit i.e. a fibre radio base station at 42 GHz and various test structures will be fabricated and characterised for the development of the design rules for predictable and reliable circuit behaviour. Plastic encapsulation of the complete module will also be investigated.
