The use of InAs based LEDs and photodiodes in infrared gas sensor instrumentation is currently limited by their poor quantum efficiency.We propose to fabricate a) powerful (>5mW) LEDs and b) efficient photodiodes using Gd gettering of the LPE growth melt. Our preliminary results are encouraging and by a systematic investigation of the influence of Gd concentration on photoluminescence and residual carrier concentration, we expect to realise substantial improvements. The relative importance of Auger and SRH recombination rates in LEDs will be studied using pump-probe (St Andrews) and high pressure studies (Surrey).The resulting devices will be evaluated in a commercial hydrocarbon gas sensor at the end of the project by the industrial collaborator (Kidde).
