Summary on Grant Application Form
Metal clusters passivated with organic ligands that degrade under an electron beam can be used as a feedstock material for the direct electron beam writing of metal nanostructures. The aims of this project are twofold: First to reduce the degree of carbon contamination that occurs during this process by the synthesis of ligands that can degrade into gaseous, volatile species that readily diffuse away. Second, the minimum feature size that can be written will be investigated using a subnanometre focussed electron beam, and the possibility of single cluster exposure and manipulation will be investigated.
