Summary on Grant Application Form
There is a tension between engineering practice and programmable systems. Typically engineering practice and programmable systems is domain-specific, exploiting the constraints of the class of systems under consideration to simplify the task for the engineer. By contrast, programmable systems emphasise universality and flexibility. The aim of this project is to explore one approach to resolving this tension. Our approach is to combine the empirical study of the engineering practice with cognitive studies of how representations support reasoning to inform the development of a framework for the definition of domain-specific notations and reasoning support. The framework will provide a systematic way to incorporate domain assumptions and practice into representations to provide appropriate support for engineers developing products incorporating programmable components.
