Summary on Grant Application Form
one of the major causes of failure in blade and disc materials for both aero-engines and land-based gas turbines is the development of surface or near-surface cracks. In such cases, a large proportion of the life of the disc or blade is taken up in initiating and growing short cracks. The aim of this research proposal is (i) to develop an understanding of the factors controlling short crack behaviour at high temperatures and (ii) to develop mechanistic models both at the microscopic and macroscopic levels and computational tools for the life assessment of uncoated single crystal superalloy components, whose service lives are controlled by short crack behaviour. The study will rely on published crack growth data on Ni-base superalloys and on a small but representative number of crack growth tests and microstructural observations of short crack behaviour in a top performance Ni-base superalloy to be carried out as part of the project. An integrated Micro-Macro mechanistic framework will be developed which will enable the effect of the oxidising environment on the volume fraction of the Ni3Al precipitates around a microcrack at the microscale to be accounted for in the macroscopic crack growth rates.
