Summary on Grant Application Form
We intend to construct acousto-optic tuneable filters (AOTFs) in micro-optic form from commercially available wafers of LiNb03, suitable for channel selection in WDM optical communications systems and intra-cavity tuning elements in frequency-agile fibre laser systems. The acoustic transducer takes the form of a broadband acoustic superlattice and is defined photo-lithographically and then formed using electric field poling, in the acousto-optic interaction medium itself. We have already demonstrated a longitudinal-wave prototype device which out-performs commercially available AOTFs, we now want to build and compare with shear wave devices, reduce the bandwith to below 1nm (0.3nm should be possible), and experiment with various techniques of apodization which rely on controlling the acoustic waves with ferroelectric domain inversion. We will then explore the possibilities offered by integration with electronic hybrid technology, mounting the filter on an alumina substrate and integrating it with various other micro-optic and electronic components to make (I) a channel-selecting optical receiver for WDM and DWDM systems, (ii) a frequency agile fibre laser system
