Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this proposal is to capitalise on the expertise in the Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Departments, in new polymer synthesis, in polymer characterisation and in process optimisation and control, in order to understand at a fundamental level the complex relationship between the polymer chemistry, the polymerisation process utilised and the properties of the resulting materials. The ultimate goal is the rapid identification of the polymer and polymer processing combination to deliver to the end user the portfolio of properties required. The proposal requests the resource to set up a laboratory containing a group of flexible batch reactors equipped with the necessary sensors and control devices together with the experimental staff to run them and the characterisation equipment required to provide rapid feedback, as well as staff with modelling expertise to develop scale-up and optimisation procedures and programs.
