We will use frequency, phase and amplitude modulated intense laser pulses to explore and control the interaction of light with atoms, molecules and clusters. This research addresses the basic physics of the interaction of intense (I0E12 - 10E17 Wcm-2) laser pules with both individual quantum systems (atoms and molecules) and nanoplasmas (formed from clusters and droplets).New approaches will be examined that use control over the full range of characteristics of one or more laser fields. These will be used to further elucidate the physics involved in the interaction processes and to manipulate the states of these systems. We will study these mechanisms and explore their use in optimising the desirable characteristics of an interaction, for example generation of high harmonic radiation or control over the outcome of a molecular process. The efficient heating of nanoplasmas formed in the laser-cluster and laser-droplet interaction will be studied and routes to enhanced heating examined. Laser-cluster plasmas will be studied and their potential use for short pulse X-ray and neutron sources explored.
