Summary on Grant Application Form
The fundamental characteristics of three-dimensional, rotating, stably-stratified flows are at present ill understood and largely unexplored. These flows underpin the dynamics of the oceans and the atmosphere, and there is a pressing practical need to better understand such flows at a fundamental level. A recent numerical modelling advance has created a unique opportunity to come to a comprehensive understanding of the generic aspects of these flows, such as the structure and distribution of the constituent vortices and the forms of interaction between them. This understanding may lead to much improved methods for simulating dynamical processes in global models of the atmosphere and oceans.
