This project will investigate the feasibility of constructing small, rugged, grating-tunable external cavity laser systems using micro-optoelectromechanical systems (MOEMS) fabrication technology and InGasAsP laser diodes operating near 1.5 micron wavelength.The system will be based on a silicon microengineered breadboard, which will provide alignment features for the laser die and a GRIN lens, and carry an electrically-tuned blazed grating on a flexure suspension in a Littrow arrangement. The mounting will be capable of initial passive adjustment, followed by dynamic wavelength tuning . The grating will be a deep reactive ion etched structure, normal to the wafer, carried on a novel flexure that will mimic an optimised pivot to allow mode-hop free tuning. Control of grating rotation and axial mode synchronisation will be by electrostatic drives.Experiments will be performed to measure grating quality and tuning dynamics using passive spectrometers. The results will be fed to rate equation models (of lasing performance) and finite element models (of heat flow, dynamics and electrostatics) to model the overall laser system, which will be compared with the performance of complete hybrid integrated tunable laser prototypes. Completed lasers will then be compared with their monolithic equivalent (multisection DBR lasers) on an industrial wavelength routing testbed.
