The project will investigate whether a GPS synchronised wide area differential protection system could be used to provide main and back-up protection for all the lines, busbars and transformers in a region of a transmission network. The research will assume that intelligent electrioic devices (IEDs) will be installed in each breaker bay and each of these devices will perform all the protection, control and monitoring functions associated with the bay. Within a substation, bay level IED's will communicate with each other and substation IED. All IEDs will use a synchronizing signal derived from a GPS clock to accurarely time tag events and perform synchronized voltage and current phasor measurement. Differential protection requires a synchronizing accuracy of approx. 30 microseconds.The project will involve the construction of an interactive EMTDC model of a section of the NGC/Scottish Power network. The simlator will use the model to calculate the effect of a fault on the voltage and current signals seen by the IEDs. Each IED will evaluate its own synchronised phasors and communicate these phasors to other IED's. Effectively, the distributed network of bay level and substation level IEDs implements the proposed wide area differential protection and evaluates the optimim tripping response.
