End-user demand for bandwidth is expected to increase substantially in the medium-long term, requiring new WDM-based access technologies to fulfil that need. In this project, we propose to develop low cost passive arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) devices, suitable for deployment in a novel WDM packet-based access network, capable of delivering a symmetric aggregate 2.5Gb/s to 6912 end users using 24 wavelengths, spaced by 200GHz. Integration of components, subsystems into the system architecture is enabled by the complementary expertise in packet networking at Essex and device design (silicon CMOS, silica/silicon) at Cambridge. The network is designed to evolve from current PON infrastructure, and integrate seamlessly with an IP/WDM transport network. The enabling technology is a reciprocal, Fourier-Fresnel passband-flattened (3dB-width =200GHz) 24x24 port AWG, which will be developed in conjunction with Nortel Networks. In addition, work on active AWGs with space-wavelength switching, and dynamic dispersion compensation functionalities to enhance network performance will be pursued. A demonstration of a cut-down network will be built at Essex and used to both evaluate the system performance (physical and higher layers) and the AWGs employed in it. Full AWG characterisation will take place at Cambridge.
