Using a decisional and complex systems perspective, this project will improve the development of new manufactured products by reducing lead-times and costs, whilst maintaining high levels of creativity and innovation. The project will integrate and support that new product development (NPD) process as a complex adaptive system of decisions by creating knowledge maps. This approach will help manufacturers to competitively bridge the gap between an idea and reality, by helping them to follow the most parsimonious and effective path of decisions that the NPD process could take, and by ensuring that the path enables innovation and creativity.Three manufacturing organisations (Mandall Engineering, George Jowitt and Sons and GKNWae) and one service organisation (PA Consulting) will support and participate in this project. All of the organisations agree that decision making is one of the most important activities for achieving success, yet they do not focus on or support the decisions which constitute the NPD process. The need for this project originated from the manufacturing organisations and thus exploitation of the research to these organisations is an implicit part of the project.
