Summary on Grant Application Form
To develop the next generation of practical fibre laser and cladding pumped fibre lasers to meet new and specific requirements of the UK aerospace industry for infrared sources. We will build on a strong ORC background in infrared technology, new materials for optical fibre devices and fibre lasers. The project will bring together key players in the field to realize improved fibre, advance fundamental spectroscopy and demonstrate prototype infrared fibre lasers. These lasers will be designed to withstand the rigours of an aerospace environment when appropriately packaged. We expect enhanced performance over existing sources in a compact, stable package which will be environmentally tested and assessed for real world applications by our industrial partners. Over this three year project the ORC, with support from UK industry, will take the partially developed concept of infrared fibre lasers and apply it to a current system requirement. Our ultimate objective will be in situ experiments and evaluation. This will represent the first demonstration and field testing infrared fibre lasers. In the aerospace industry.
