The objective of Inspection Qualification is to design a robust, theoretically sound, inspection technique, which for ultrasonic inspection is a highly skilled activity. It relies on the combination of technical or theoretical justification as well as a limited number of practical trials. Unfortunately, this means that the overall process is time consuming, costly and requires the production of a substantial amount of supporting documentation. It is to address these problems that this project proposes to apply state-of-the-art intelligent system methods, in conjunction with an advanced NDT Workbench, in order to effect a substantial cost and time reduction. Due to the complexity of the problem, no single technique is applicable and a set of AI methods has been chosen relevant to different aspects of the qualification process. These are based on Case Based Reasoning, Rule Based Reasoning and Model Based Reasoning. It is also proposed to integrate these components using a novel AI approach called Intelligent Agents. The project is a joint collaboration between the Centre for Ultrasonic Engineering (CUE) and the Centre for Electrical Power Engineering (CEPE).
