Summary on Grant Application Form
This project is about increasing the operator speed, and reducing the power consumption of silicon on insulator (SOI) based integrated optics. This will be achieved by reducing the cross sectional dimensions of currently used waveguides and modulators from 6-8 microns, to the order of 1 micron. This introduces difficulties in coupling to the thinner waveguides. Consequently we also wish to develop the technique of grated assisted coupling, to produce a high efficiency means of coupling to 1 micron waveguides. Our previous experience suggests we are likely to be successful. In the past we have produced the most efficient optical modulators world-wide (1995), and more recently we have fabricated the most efficient surface grating coupliers (1998).Therefore we are well placed to build on these most relevant achievements. It is estimated from modelling that the improvement in operating bandwidth will be at least 6000%, and the reduction in operating power will be 2500%. Evidence for these estimates is given in the proposal.
