Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed project focuses on the development of techniques for real time content-based tagging and subsequent search and retrieval of video images in Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) systems. The project will develop techniques to generate metadata associated with CCTV images that can be applied in real-time as the surveillance video is captured, compressed and transmitted. Metadata descriptors emerging from the MPEG-7 standardisation activities will be used in the project. The project will develop XML-based schemes to automatically generate metadata, to manage real-time storage of material, and to provide support mechanisms to enable the distributed access and use of a centralised repository. An important part of the project will be to evaluate the most efficient subset of descriptors to support DSP power requirements and enable accurate and effective search and retrieval of archived surveillance material. The applicants research experience in multimedia metadata and their key involvement in MPEG-7 ensure that metadata descriptions and associated techniques will be developed from existing state of the art research in this area and conform to, reflect, and inform emerging standards. The industrial collaborators roles at the forefront of developments in CCTV technology will ensure the high relevance and exploitability to industry of the techniques developed.
