Summary on Grant Application Form
A fundamental underpinning investigation will be made of the structural and magnetic properties of advanced materials systems for use as thin film recording media. Synchrotron radiation will be used to study the crystallography of longitudinal and perpendicular advanced Co-alloy media. The project will develop existing work which aims to provide an understanding of the microstructural origins of the magnetic properties of thin film media, in particular exchange coupling effects and magnetic viscosity.Of principal interest are the effects of stacking faults and the distribution of c-axes of the Co-alloy layer and their accurate measurement using grazing incidence X-ray measurements. These properties will be studied in longitudinal media where parameters such as grain-size, layer thickness and preferential orientation are varied to assess the effect of resulting changes in crystallography on magnetisation reversal. Depth profiling techniques will also be developed to investigate the progressive growth of the magnetic layer in longitudinal media. Similar studies will be carried out on perpendicular recording media which will be composed of Pt based multilayers.
