We will develop a versatile apparatus for the study of QIPC (quantum information processing and communication). The apparatus is a linear ion trap, with laser cooling and manipulation of the three to five trapped calcium ions. The programme consists of a sequence of steps of increasing experimental control of the ions, culminating in complete, flexible, coherent control and measurement of their joint quantum state.The apparatus will be developed from a laser-cooled ion trap already built. The first state is to improve the stability of the laser systems, and install further ones. We will then perform an original measurement protocol to read out the spin state of single trapped ions. Next we will manipulate the spin state via coherent Raman transitions and, combining this with optical pumping, achieve sideband cooling of an ion crystal to near its motional ground state.Finally, using the above methods with a laser focussed onto individual ions in a crystal, we will implement fundamental concepts of QIPC: first, driving the system state to an entangled state with high (>50%) efficiency, and then applying quantum error correction. The latter is a powerful central concept in QIPC; the ion trap is an ideal system to realise it.
