Modelling of dendritic river systems is compled and at present involves both rainfall-runoff and river flow routing simulations. Over the past few decades, a great deal of research has been focused on rainfall-runoff and river flow routing models and as a result, numerous hydraulic/hydrological models have been produced. However, many natural river systems tend to be dendritic and so far insufficient research has been conducted to allow the modelling of integrated dendritic river systems in real time. This project will focus on developing a nonlinear dendritic river modelling methodology based on Support Vector Machines (SVMs). Currently, SVMs have become an emerging technique for the Artificial Intelligence community that have proven advantages over traditional Neural Networks. They have been applied successfully to classification tasks such as pattern recognition, OCR and more recently to regression and time series problems. The features of SVMs enable this new technology to be applied to model dendritic river systems. The proposed research is fundamental in nature and is designed to extend our current knowledge in hydroinformatics and stochastic hydraulics.
