Summary on Grant Application Form
The fluid dynamical behaviour of thin liquid films forced to spread over a solid surface is of enormous significance in engineering science and practice. Th enovel and timely aspect considered here is a systematic experimental investigation of the flow accompanying the evolution of such thin liquid films over patterned (geometrically and chemically heterogeneous) surfaces commensurate with the motion of a spinning liquid drop and a fixed volume of liquid spreading, under the action of gravity, down the side of a noical surface. Both are particular types of free-boundary flows with a three-phase moving contact line, facilitating the study of several aspects of forced spreading. Although liquid spreading down the side of a cone represents a completely new way to study such flows it has, in common with a spinning drop, a moving contact line that grows in length in accordance with the advance of the front. Of particular interest is: the motion of the contact line and associated dynamic contact angles; the role of the same and of patterning on th eonset of insability; correlation of pattern size with the range of influence of the disturbance that is imparted to the flow; the capture of thin film flow profiles.
