The aim of this program is to design, construct and characterise a novel type of single electron device with ferromagnetic electrodes (FSET). Much literature predicting the theoretical behaviour of FSETs has appeared in recent months, but a convincing demonstrator device has yet to be reported. Our proposal is to use state of the art electron beam step-edge lithography to make a device which can be used to test these theoretical forecasts. In particular we hope to observe magnetically dependant Coulomb Blockade and to verify both the predicted oscillations in the tunnel magnetoresistance and the periodic spin splitting of the Fermi energy of the central electrode as a function of applied voltage.The issues to be addressed include; development of an undercut step edge fabrication technique; choice and preparation of suitable magnetic films and insulators; optimisation of the magnetic geometry to give best magnetic reversal; low temperature high sensitivity electrical measurement of the device characteristics. The project combines the resources of the Universities of Oxford (device design and film growth), York (MBE film fabrication) and Glasgow (nanolithography, Lorentz microscopy of magnetic elements and low noise electrical measurements).
