The proposed research is concerned with the design of computer-based models for the prediction of microstructure during thermal treatment of maraging steels, using advanced phase transformation theory. This is supported by the experimental aspects of microstructural/mechanical characterisation and thermal analysis study of the phase transformation so to provide direct evidence to compare with the prediction made by these computer-based models. The aim is to assess the viability of making microstructural predictions to within useful accuracy; to the applicants best knowledge, such detailed calculations have not been attempted before.This research will benefit aircraft and aerospace, and tool industries, which rely on maraging steels. Industrial links with steel producers such as British Steel, Sandvik and ALLVAC have already been established. The end-users may benefit from the prospect of obtaining same mechanical properties with reduced treatment cost. These companies will also have access to the model developed. In addition, contributions to the science will have long-tem benefit to the improvement of steel products.This project targets at the continuous improvements of an existing material, which has medical benefits, following both of the two main Recommendations in the Technology foresight (Materials Sector). Two High Priority Subject Areas(Areas I and v) are addressed.
