A real-space theory of magneto-transport and magnetic anisotropy will be developed for nanostructures far from equilibrium. It will be based on the Keldysh formalism and will use fully realistic s, p, d tight-binding bands. The theory will be used to calculate the current through a cluster of atoms or a thin pillar placed between two large (macroscopic) contacts. It will be applied to calculate the domain wall magnetoresistance of a nanocontact and explore its dependence on the growth direction and shape of Ni and Co pillars. In addition, a new analytic approach will be exploited to investigate the magnetic anisotropy which provides information about the magnetic configuration. The Keldysh formalism will be used to investigate the MR of a tunnelling junction under strong bias and to calculate the current-driven magnetization reversal of two magnetic layers separated by a non-magnetic spacer. Finally, the real-space method will be used to study rigorously the effect of impurities, interfacial roughness and small terraces on engineered CPP GMR structures.
