A key aim in clean synthesis is to design selective heterogeneous catalysts for a range of important organic reactions. The use of supported complexes in microporous solids offers a promising route to these reagents, but it can be difficult to prepare such composite catalysts by assembling the complexes after the zeolites have been formed. We propose to explore new routes to encapsulating complexes during crystallisaiton of the zeolites. By choosing molecules that are stable under the synthesis conditions we will prepare shape selective catalysts. In particular we will examine base catalysis for C-C bond formation (using guanidine, phosphazenes and the co-enzyme thiamine), oxidation catalysis (using transition metals complexed by N-macrocycles) and specific transformations using co-enzymes. We believe this approach is both attractive and feasible (based on recent literature and our own studies on templating using azamacrocycles) and will provide a general route to novel 'zeozymes'.
