Summary on Grant Application Form
The project is aimed at the recovery and recycling of iron salts used as coagulents in the water treatment industry. Recycling will be achieved by developing an in-pulp ion exchange technique to treat the iron-rich water treatment sludges to extract and recycle the iron coagulant salt within the process. This will significantly reduce the volume of sludge for final disposal. A parallel investigation will be made into the recovery of iron salts suitable for use as coagulants from iron ochres formed in the discharges from abandoned mines. If this proves to be successful, it will change an environmentally damaging, widespread problem into a potentially useful and sustainable resource. The applied development work will be underpinned and advanced by a PhD study at a more fundamental level into the physical properties and chemical reactivities of precipitated iron hydroxide sludges. The properties of these sludges can vary dramatically with relatively minor changes in precipitation comnditions and their reactivities change as they age. An understanding of the causes and magnitude -)f these effects is necessary background knowledge for the optimisation of the envisaged ion exchange process.
