Summary on Grant Application Form
Platform funding is sought to underpin the research group by providing long term support for two key researchers: Kevin Potter, senior research fellow, and Mike Jones, senior experimental officer. A core scientific programme supported by EPSRC will be established together with an applications programme supported by industry. The core programme will focus on residual stresses, and protection against impact, identified by the industries partners as critical issues having a significant effect on cost and reliability. An experimental programme will be undertaken to cure composites under constraint, measure the stresses arising throughout the cure cycle, and correlate with analysis. Crackin will be investigated and predictive models developed.Fibre wrinkling, variations in volume fraction and other factors affecting cure distortion in curved composites will be investigated experimentally. Models will be developed to predict distortion in components taking account of these factors. The overwinding technique for protecting against impact will be developed to produce higher winding tension. The mechanisms providing protection will be studied and the approach extended to tubular and non-circular components and built-up structures.
