Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of the proposed research is to develop a novel apparatus to investigate femtosecond dynamics in molecular cations, based on a combination of phase-sensitive detection and zero-kinetic energy pulsed-field ionisation (ZEKE-PFI), and to exploit this new tool to monitor and control vibrational wavepacket dynamics in small isolated molecular ions using specially designed pulse sequences. The results of the proposed research will lead to an improved understanding of molecular dynamics of ions, and the interactions between near ZEKE electrons and the molecular ion core, and will pose new challenges to theoretical calculations of photochemistry.
