This application seeks support for a research programme involving the Brunel Institute of Power Systems at Brunel University in collaboration with the National Grid Company Plc. The aim of the project is to investigate an integratedHeuristic and algorithmic-based approach for the purpose of developing a transition-optimised voltage and reactive power control tool.Essentially this approach would consider voltage and reactive power control as a time-based scheduling problem, with the intention of avoiding unnecessary changes in status and output of reactive control plant.The time-transitions of reactive output and voltage targets would follow an optimised trajectory, in an analogous manner to the schedule of generator MW outputs produced by unit commitment programs. The algorithms to be developed would be based on Lagrangian relaxation, as it would provide an algorithm with appropriate computational performance and robustness. Hybridization of Langrangian relaxation and fuzzy logic would be considered.The outcome of the research will be computer-based tools which will assist power utility control engineers at the control centre in effective monitoring and controlling system voltage stability, whilst minimising the cost of active and reactive power.
