Every concrete bridge in the United Kingdom is due to be assessed for its flexural and shear strength as part of the UK Bridge Assessment Programme. To prevent unnecessary demolition or repair of adequate concrete bridges, the analytical techniques adopted must be realistic and accurate. It is proposed that, through experimental validation, such analysis methods be developed on this project which allow for the accurate appraisal in shear strength of concrete slabs and beams which contain inadequately-anchored steel reinforcement. Such hand-analysis procedures will be realistic and accurate, based on lower-and upper-bound plastic approaches. Previous and present research being conducted by the Principal Investigator suggests that anchorage requirements in bridge assessment guides are significantly over-conservative, leading to unnecessary, expensive bridge strengthening schemes. The results from this research will be disseminated throughout the bridge assessment fraternity in the UK, so that bridge-owning authorities may be fully aware of the actual capacities of concrete bridges which contain inadequately-anchored reinforcement, leading to less conservative appraisals and prevention of needless repair or demolition.EngProg\
