Summary on Grant Application Form
The use of superconductors in journal bearings is new and provides significant advantages, particularly for cylindrical flywheels. We will first build and test a small prototype journal bearing to test the priciples. URENCO will provide a fully instrumented and functioning flywheel system using active magnetic bearings. We will replace one of these bearings with a superconducting system and test it under various loading conditions. Normal conductors or low resistivity superconducting tapes will be investigated as damping rings. At the same time we will model behaviour of the critical state in the superconductor in this geometry, calculate forces and stiffnesses, and compare the results with experiment.
