It is proposed to develop a ceramic fuel cell reactor (CFCR) for the production of HCN from CH4/NH3 with high yield and selectivity, and the simultaneous conversion of waste chemical energy to electrical energy. The by-product hydrogen will be removed through a proton-conducting ceramic electrolyte membrane, which forms the basis for a high temperature fuel cell. The separation of dehydrogenation (anode) from oxidation (cathode) prevents undesirable products of partial oxidation, while the overall process is exothermic and thermodynamically favourable. The kinetics of HCN production at the anode are likely to be promoted by the electrochemical removal of hydrogen from the catalyst surface; this will also circumvent equilibrium limits. These factors should enable the temperature of operation to be lowered to considerably below 1000C. The aim of the project is to identify suitable materials for the electrolyte membrane and anode/cathode electrocatalysts, to develop dense, impermeable proton conducting membranes, and to characterise their performance and stability. In addition, it is intended to carry out the design, fabrication and testing of the CFCR.
