Summary on Grant Application Form
The visiting fellow will provide input to steering and critical appraisal of the research detailed within this proposal and its sister-proposals. Professor Ostachowicz will provide a deep perspective of the materials science required for successful implementation of this research within the context of vibration analysis and, ultimately, control. His background in dynamics, materials science and numerical analysis makes him particularly well placed to inject the necessary expertise. In general terms the project addresses the potential for using shape memory alloy wires within composite material so that dynamic performance of the material can be adapted to suit the structural configurations of interest. The project will culminate in an applications demonstrator based on a Rolls Royce engine in which intellignet composite components are to be used to control critical stiffness and damping characteristics.
