Summary on Grant Application Form
We are requesting support to replace our existing helium liquefier, which was purchased from BOC with the aid of an SRC Research Grant in 1980, with a new Linde TCF20 liquefier. The new liquefier will enable us to produce 30000 litres per year at an estimated overall cost (including depreciation) of 2.20 per litre: the running costs (excluding depreciation) are 1.31 per litre and we are seeking support from EPSRC for 24 months production at this level. A new liquid nitrogen tank and associated plumbing will be installed to enable liquid nitrogen precooling to be used in the liquefaction process. Liquid nitrogen precooling increases the helium liquefaction rate from 20 to 40 litres per hour. The liquid helium produced will enable us to continue our current research programmes on superfluid helium3, convection in helium3/4 mixtures and magnetism, including the Vibrating Sample Magnetometer, and to instigate new research programmes to investigate Taylor-Couette flow in superfluid helium4 and to investigate the structure of aerogels using superfluid helium4.
