Summary on Grant Application Form
The programme is a study of the modified 'composite' spin coating technique for the fabrication of high-quality ferroelectric films. The difference from conventional sol-gel spin coating is the formation of a stable suspension of ferroelectric powder within a matching sol. It is this 'composite' which is spun, allowing individual layers, each several microns in thickness, to be deposited. The proposal will focus on the realisation of both PZT and PST films, targeting the attainment of piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties appropriate to device applications. Novel modifications to the process are outlined which aim to increase film densification, whilst minimising second 'inactive' phases. The patterning of the films will be assessed, using novel photolithographic processing and screen printing.
