Slotted surface microfilters designed for the removal of suspended particles with diameters greater than 1 micron will be produced. These filters reject material on the basis of pore and particle size, like sieves, and do not require a tortuous pore flow channel to achieve the pore rating. Thus surface microfilters do not foul internally. The slotted geometry is less prone to pore plugging than a circular pore opening. The research will quantify the benefit of the slotted geometry compared to circular pores and conventional tortuous pore channel membranes. Under crossflow microfiltration operation both options for slot arrangement will be tested: slot parallel and perpendicular to the oncoming flow. By a careful design and consideration of the filter medium it will be possible to obtain microfilters with the same pore size but different number of pores open to flow. Tests with these filters, operating under otherwise identical conditions, will provide information on the membrane critical threshold flux effect. Surface filters have a higher flux for a given pressure and are easier to clean than microfilters that internally foul. The research is relevant to applications requiring high flow rates and good particle removal, such as Cryptosporidium oocyst removal from potable water.
