The longshore transport of beach sediment is of fundamental importance to shoreline stability and coastal evolution. An increase in the rate of sediment transport along a coast can only be maintained by the progressive removal of sediment from the beach resulting in coastal erosion.Equations that predict the amount of longshore transport as a function of environmental parameters are widely used by the coastal engineering community for the design of coastal structures, protection works and beach nourishment schemes. However, recent research has indicated that these equations underpredict the longshore transport rate under low-energy wave conditions by a factor of ten. This is tentatively ascribed to the large contribution of swash zone processes to the total longshore transport load under low-energy wave conditions.This project will conduct a number of field experiments to investigate longshore sediment transport processes on low-energy beaches. A range of techniques will be employed to measure the longshore sediment rate, including beach surveying, tracer studies and the deployment of state-of-the-art nearshore instruments (wave sensors, 3 dimensional current meters and suspended sediment concentration sensors).
