Summary on Grant Application Form
Most practical engineering flows are turbulent and unsteady or oscillatory. However, the vast majority of numerical predictions for flow and heat transfer in electronics, where the flow domain is congested are treated as steady. In EPSRC project GR/L 05600 a strong oscillatory flow component was measured and predicted for isothermal flow in a realistic electronic system. This was found to have a significant effect on particle transport. The temporal behaviour of predictions was discovered to be a strong function of turbulence model and convective term treatment. Certain turbulence models had clear deficiencies, giving surprisingly different oscillatory flow amplitudes and frequencies. Based on these findings it is proposed to carry out further numerical predictions for oscillatory flows in realistic and idealised electronic systems. Discretization requirements and various turbulence model suitabilities will be studied. The prevalence of oscillatory flows and heat transfer enhancements arising from them will be assessed. The work will be restricted to forced convection systems.
