A new, UK Wide network is proposed, which will consist of scientists with a common interest in the surfaces of biologically and biomedically important materials and their interaction with the bio-environment. The aim of the network is to primarily to encourage communication between members with different research backgrounds and expertise. Membership will be biased initially towards surface scientists, but will include biologists, clinicians and industrial members. Development of the network will ensure a more even balance of membership by the end of the term of the grant. A major objective of the network is to publicise the availability of high technology techniques and there applicability to the investigation of fundamental biological processes. This will be achieved by research meetings and techniques workshops to be held in conjunction with the surface science industry. Clinical workshops will ensure that surface scientists are aware of important medical issues, and these will be supported by biological workshops to ensure cross-disciplinary education. The frequency of research meetings and workshops will be high initially to attain sizeable and broad-ranging membership, reducing to a lower but regular level once a firm basis has been established.
