In plasmas, electrical discharges, combustion processes and the ionosphere, free electrons are present in high concentrations. These electrons play a crucial role in the overall chemistry of these environments because of the diversity of molecular transformations, which the impact of an electron on a molecule can induce. The aim of this project is to investigate dissociative electron attachment (DEA) where an electron attaches to a neutral molecule forming a metastable negatively charged molecule, which dissociates. This fundamental process is particularly important because sections for DEA can be very high at low electron impact energies. Also highly influential in the chemistry of these environments are unstable free radicals; in spite of this previous studies of dissociative attachment have concentrated on stable molecules and, to the applicant's knowledge, no complimentary investigation of dissociative electron attachment to short-lived unstable free radical has been reported. Therefore, this proposal suggests the first study of dissociative electron attachment to unstable radicals, which should produce fundamental results relevant in the above areas.The feasibility of the proposed experiment has been considered and the predicted data collection times are favourable.Key words describing areas of proposal.Molecular physics, electron scattering, free radicals, plasmas
