Summary on Grant Application Form
It is proposed to develop the multi-tube Physical Vapour Transport method, which has already been shown to be successful in the growth of CdTe, to grown large crystals of the ternary compound (Cd,Zn)Te. Once modifications to the existing apparatus have been completed, crystals of controlled composition. The crystals will be assessed, in the first instance by etching studies to determine dislocation densities etc. and by double and triple x-ray diffraction to assess general crystal quality. Second phase inclusions and compositional uniformity will be measured by GEC-Marconi Infrared, and suitable crystals will be used as substrates in epitaxial trials. Electrical properties will also be measured, principally resistivity, to determine the potential suitability of crystals for use as detectors of ionising radiation (this requires semi-insulating material). Crystals will also be provided to Dr D Keebles of Dundee University for epr and position annhuilation studies.
