Effective scheduling is essential for competitiveness throughout most sectors of industry and commerce. Scheduling is also an important research area for Operational Research, which has generated a wealth of theoretical results and yielded enhanced operating performance for a considerable number of industrial and commercial enterprises. However, there are significant barriers to the application of scheduling theory to the dynamic, uncertain environments which are encountered in practice. Many production systems now have the ability to capture data in real-time but few are able to use this data to influence scheduling decisions, which has been cited in the literature as a considerable problem in practice. This research project investigates, from a fundamental mathematical perspective, how real-time information may be used to improve the performance and applicability of scheduling models, algorithms and heuristics. This is the first wide-ranging analytical study of how real-time information may be used to improve scheduling decisions. We obtain theoretical results in order to extend the existing scheduling theory and simulation-based results in order to demonstrate the applicability of our approach. We argue that it is possible to make Operational Research Techniques more effective, efficient and applicable for solving dynamic scheduling problems by using real-time information.
