Summary on Grant Application Form
Fast pyrolysis of biomass produces an oil which has greater potential as a fuel or chemical feedstock but cannot be used directly due to its high oxygen content, instability, high water content and corrosive properties. This research proposal seeks to investigate a process route via fast pyrolysis of biomass coupled with catalytic hydrotreatment to produce premium grade fuels and speciality chemicals.Detailed chemical analyses of the oils from pyrolysis and also after catalytic hydrotreatment will enable the linking of process conditions to the final end product. In addition, model compound work will enable the reaction mechanisms to be determined. The project seeks to produce a substitute premium grade fuel with a high H/C ratio, low oxygen content and low molecular weight. In addition, speciality chemicals known to be present in biomass pyrolysis oils with applications in the production of adhesives and also for use in the pharmaceuticals and petrochemical industries will be investrigated to increase their production via the pyrolysis and catalytic hydrotreatment process conditions.
