The objective of the proposed network is to better understand the operation of power systems with significant wind power import, and hence to contribute to the further development of wind energy. The main focus will be on island power systems, such as those in Britain, Ireland and Crete. These are conventional power systems, powered mainly by steam turbines. Wind conditions are highly favourable, and for this reason Ireland and Crete in particular are seeing above average wind power penetrations. It is important to study system operational problems, real or imagined, which might impede further wind energy development. Successful resolution will enable island systems and, ultimately, the integrated European systemt o import increasing wind power.The network will start with nine partners, including two from industry. The programme will be based largely in the initial stages on projected research at Queen's University, University College Dublin and UMIST. Interaction between all nine members will be facilitated through a web site, meetings and workshops. It is expected that other participants will join as the network develops.It is intended to summarise the network's expertise and conclusions in a final report or book designed for wide circulation.
