Summary on Grant Application Form
The work proposed here is targetted at developing ultra-hard, but tough PAPVD coatings based on combinations of chromium (and other Group VI transition metals) with small additions of other metallic elements (such as copper) and non-metallic elements (such as nitrogen and boron), producing novel nanocomposite layers with enhanced combinations of desirable attributes. The work will be applicable in sputter, arc and evaporant-source PVD coating devices, and thus of direct relevance to virtually all commercial plasma-assisted PVD methods. The main body of work will comprise two parallel strands: twin-target, closed-field magnetron sputtering studies - to determine the optimum coating compositions - and electron-beam (EB)PVD - to develop evaporant source materials which can be utilised in both single- and twin-crucible EBPVD systems. The tribological behaviour and corrosion resistance of the new coatings produced will be compared to benchmark coatings of standard PVD CrN, electroplated hard chrome and thermally sprayed chrome/chrome-carbide or tungsten-carbide/ cobalt, to give a realistic, cross-technology comparison of the improved performance which these nanocomposite coatings can provide.
