Summary on Grant Application Form
Contact have been established with Professor Mustafa Erdik, Director of the Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute. He will facilitate contact with local authorities and experts and arrange meetings with them and visits to restricted areas. Further contacts have been established with Professor Karaesman of METU, Ankara, and Professor Karadogan, director of the EERlab of Instanbul Technical University. They have both already extensively visited the epicentral artea and represent a valuable source of information and support for the EEFIT team. The EEFIT team will undertake a field mission lasting 7 to 10 days to allow a thorough investigation of the damaged area. A more detailed programme will be drawn up in the following days, in relation to accessibility to specific sites. On arrival in Instanbul, 2 days will be spent in collection of useful documentation, meetings with other experts, obtaining permits etc. A detail survey of geophysical and seismological evidence of the earthquake will be conducted in the epicentral area, acquiring strong motion data from local sources. Areas and specific constructions of interest have been identified in Golcuk, Yalova and Sakarye; the town of Adapazari; the ancient city of Bursa; dams and other civil structures in the region; industrial facilities.
