Summary on Grant Application Form
The parameters that control Griffith flaw formation in silicate glasses and whether such flaws are related to structural inhomogeneities in these glasses will be determined. A range of silicate glasses in rod and fibre form will be produced and their mechanical properties including strength will be measured as a function of composition, manufacturing route and post-manufacture storage conditions. Fractographic investigations of the failed samples will be conducted. Having gained an understanding of the relationships between composition and mechanical properties in silicate glasses compositions with improved mechanical properties will be developed.
